A coach and strict disciplinarian, his career spanned five decades, two years at Biglerville High School (1930–32) and 26 years at Gettysburg High. He retired in 1973. He coached football, basketball, baseball and track and field and served as Gettysburg’s athletic director for 13 years. His football teams were 60–53–15; basketball included 334 wins, six league titles, three straight District 3 titles in 1941–42–43; track teams posted 14 conference crowns, including 12 in 13 years and did not lose a dual or triangular meet in eight years including a 28-meet win streak. He was a graduate of Millersburg High and Shippensburg State Teachers College.
