Edward S. “Eddie” Plank

Considered one of the most dominant professional baseball pitchers of the twentieth century. Recruited right out of Gettysburg College by venerable Connie Mack. Compiled a lifetime record of 326 wins, 194 losses spanning a career from 1901 to 1917 with three teams, mainly the Philadelphia Athletics. Won 20 or more games eight times and led A’s to six pennants and three World Series. Inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame, Cooperstown, NY in 1946. Born and raised in Gettysburg, attended Gettysburg High and Academy. Was named the greatest left-hand pitcher of the first half of the 20th century. Died February 24, 1926 at the age of 50.
