After graduating from Dillsburg High School in 1915, he entered the service and fought in six major battles in World War I and was twice a prisoner of war. Following his discharge he entered Gettysburg College, where he starred in football and track, earning two letters in football and winning the Eastern Collegiate shot put championship in 1921. Following graduation, he began a three-decade career as teacher, football and head track coach and athletic director at Connellsville High School. His track teams won four WPIAL titles and he was credited with developing Johnny Woodruff, Gold Medal winner at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
