Steve Courson

Year Inducted: 2003

A 1973 graduate of Gettysburg High School, Steve played offensive guard at the University of South Carolina, where his combination of size and speed made him a pro prospect. He played in both the Blue-Gray All-Star Classic and the East-West Shrine Game following his senior year and was selected in the fifth round of the NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played for both the Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during a nine-year NFL career. In a 1985 feature story in Sports Illustrated, Steve became one of the first NFL players to publicly acknowledge his own steroid use (which was neither banned nor tested for at the time.) In 1991 he co-authored the book False Glory which shed light on the NFL’s steroids problem, and he continued to speak out on the topic until his accidental death in 2005.
