Ira D. Plank

Like his famous brother Eddie Plank, he was an accomplished athlete and businessman. Born, raised and educated in Gettysburg, this right hand pitcher played three varsity years for Gettysburg College followed by nine years in professional baseball. He returned to Gettysburg College and spent 38 years as head baseball coach. His teams won 277 games, lost 171 and posted several conference championships against some of the strongest collegiate baseball teams in the country. Among his athletes was Willie Sherdel of the St. Louis Cardinals. On May 12, 1938 he was honored by the American College Baseball coaches for his dedicated service to the sport.
