A three-sport athlete, he signed a baseball contract with the Philadelphia Athletics right out of Gettysburg High School. He pitched for Williamsport, Class A, and Savannah, GA, Class AAA. A torn muscle ended his pitching career with a combined 17–14 record and 2.96 ERA. As a quarterback, he guided Gettysburg to its first undefeated season. In two years he completed over 50 percent of his passes and was first team all-conference. He missed only one game during his last two years of basketball, scoring 20 or more points in 17 of 40 games. He was a two-time all-conference player and received All-State honorable mention. He also threw two no-hitters in baseball and batted over .500.
