John “Dick” Meckley

Dick served as player, manager and coach in the South Penn Baseball League for nearly 50 years prior to his retirement in 1995. He was instrumental in the formation and shaping of two South Penn baseball teams, Brushtown and McSherrystown. Meckley helped construct and name St. Mary’s Field in McSherrystown, home of the Twins. In 2006, the South Penn League established the “Meckley Sportsmanship Award,” to be selected by the league’s umpires and presented to the team which displayed the best sportsmanship during the season.
