For 44 years Rome tended to the physical needs of Gettysburg College athletes of every sport. He was truly an icon in the field of collegiate athletic training. Doctors, specialists and even his peers consulted with him. He served as the head trainer of the Pennsylvania Big 33 for many
years. In later years he even treated the President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower. He began his career as an engineer, but soon became intrigued with athletic training, studying under Olympic coach Lawson Robertson. A versatile individual, he supervised the construction of the Municipal Stadium power plant, promoted the Dempsey-Tunny heavyweight championship and supervised the construction of Gettysburg College’s track.
