At Gettysburg High, Earl quarterbacked the football team and received a Big 33 nomination. In basketball, he set the record for most points in a game and was the first 1000-point scorer in school history. He received All-State honorable mention status in both sports. He also lettered in baseball and track and field. At Gettysburg College, he quarterbacked the freshman team to a winning record and helped the basketball team post a 12-3 mark. During his sophomore year, he was named college-division ECAC Sophomore of the Year. During three Bullet years, he was conference passing leader, ranked seventh nationally and was named Little All-American honorable mention. He also played semi-pro football in Harrisburg and coached at Gettysburg High.
