Francis “Pooney” Carter

“Pooney” was a 1942 graduate of Gettysburg High School where he excelled on the football team as both an offensive and defensive end and place kicker. He also participated in basketball, track and field, and volleyball. His ability earned him an athletic scholarship to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana to play football. Following graduation with a degree in Health and Physical Education, he taught Health and Physical Education at Mary B. Cable Junior High School for 30 years and eventually became Dean of Students at Short Ridge High School in Indiana before retiring in the late 1980s.
