At Delone Catholic High School, Keith pitched to a 9–3 record including a 7–1 slate as a senior. A walk-on at Penn State, he won 14 and lost 8, being named best Lion pitcher in 1987 and 1988. Drafted by Cleveland in 1988, he played for two seasons, pitching in 22 games and posting a 3–2 record, before his professional career was curtailed by injury. Keith came home to pitch for the McSherrystown/New Oxford Twins in the South Penn Baseball League with a career mark of 107–53 and more than 1,020 strikeouts. He was twice named the league’s outstanding pitcher.
