Bob, an 11 varsity letter winner at Gettysburg High School, was a 3-year All-South Penn honoree in football as a fullback/linebacker, a 2-year All-South Penn honoree in basketball, and a 2-year All-South Penn honoree in baseball as a catcher. Following graduation, he attended Gettysburg College where he became the starting center/defensive tackle on the football teams in 1963 and 1964, where he helped the 1964 team to win the Middle Atlantic Conference title. He was named the 1st team offensive center for the Middle Atlantic Conference 1964 team and received honorable mention at the same position for the 1964 Eastern Collegiate Coaches All-East team. In addition, he was the starting catcher for the Middle Atlantic Conference champion Bullets baseball team that finished as a runner-up in the University Division Eastern Regional Playoff in 1962.
