An outstanding athlete at Gettysburg High School, he started in just about every football, basketball and baseball game for three years, earning nine letters. Entering Gettysburg College, he was an immediate success in basketball and baseball. He was elected captain of the basketball team and in the spring played most baseball positions in three years. His first try at collegiate football landed him a starting end job. Following graduation, he became the head coach at Bellfonte High School (8-0-1) and the next year went to Berwick High. In 14 years his teams dominated eastern Pennsylvania football and his basketball teams won three eastern state titles. During World War II he rose to the rank of commander in the Navy.
