In the late 1950’s, when he was preparing to graduate from Albright College, Merrill learned of a coaching position at Gettysburg. He applied, was hired and remained with the Warrior basketball program till his last game in 1989. Beginning as an assistant under George Forney, he assumed the head coaching reins in 1962. His 27-year stint as head coach led to a .621 winning percentage in 618 games. He led the Warriors to four Blue Mountain crowns in three different decades — the 1967, 1974, 1981 and 1987 seasons. His 1967-68 team was undefeated until losing to Steel-High in the District championship game. The 1974-75 team posted a 23-2 record.
