Ed was an outstanding cross country and track runner at Gettysburg College and a successful coach at his alma mater. He twice ran at the nationals in cross country, placed first in the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships as a senior and led his team to 3 consecutive MAC titles. In track, he set a school record in the mile, won the MAC indoor mile title as a senior, and placed fifth at the national championships in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a school record time, being named All-American. As a 12-year collegiate coach, he began the women’s track & field program, had his women’s cross country team place 14th at the nationals in 1987, won the 1987 MAC title and coached the 1993 men’s national champion in the 200 meters. Ed ended his coaching career after 14 years at Gettysburg High School where he coached eight state qualifiers and the 2004 state champion in the triple jump.
