A native of western Pennsylvania, he matriculated to Gettysburg College. Lettered three years as football offensive guard and linebacker, played against teams like Penn State, Army and Temple. He was named to the All-East Team and in 1936 played in the college all-star game against the Philadelphia Eagles alongside Vince Lombardi (Fordham) and Yale Heisman winner Larry Kelly. He wrestled three years and lost only five heavyweight bouts en route to winning the North Atlantic Wrestling Conference title in 1937. Following World War II, he began a coaching career which took him to Biglerville High School, Leechburg (four undefeated seasons and a WPIAL crown) and Lebanon Valley College.
