The first Gettysburg College student drafted in World War II, he returned to set an incredible record. He was one of the hardest charging backs in Bullet history, consistently scoring game-winning TDs against formidable opponents. He was also the starting forward on the basketball team and in the spring hit .350 as an outfielder in baseball. He was named AP Honorable Mention All-American and All-State in football. Upon graduation, he was named head football and baseball coach at Gettysburg High School where he guided the school to its first undefeated grid season. He returned to Gettysburg College, serving as head football coach from 1969–72 and was also interim athletic director before his retirement.
