A 1936 graduate of Gettysburg High School, Buck attended Gettysburg College playing football, basketball and baseball for three years. After his junior year, he received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point where he played center on the football team and catcher on the baseball squad. He was baseball team captain his junior year. When a medical condition precluded military service, Buck remained at West Point as an assistant coach during the years which Army went undefeated and won the national championship with the legendary Blanchard and Davis. He later coached three sports at Valley Forge Military Academy for two years.
