At Delone Catholic High School, John helped lead the basketball team turnaround from losing to the state title. At Kutztown University from 1976–78, John was a letter-winner and key member of the men’s basketball team. The University inducted him into their Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. In 1982, Gabriel broke into the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers where he served in many capacities, including a stint as assistant coach, for 6 years. He then joined the Orlando Magic as their first employee and became involved in selecting draft picks, making trades, and handling free-agent signings. In 2000, he was named NBA Executive of the Year. He now serves as a scout with the New York Knicks in spite of dealing with Parkinson’s Disease
