A graduate of Littlestown High School, John was nominated for the 1977 Big 33 team, was an honorable mention AP all-state Scholastic football team defensive tackle, and made the Sunday Patriot’s Blue Chip List Top 5 list for best players in the Midstate. In track & field, John broke Littlestown’s school record for the discus with a toss of 156’ 3.5” – a record that still stood 35 years later. John went on to Shippensburg, where he was a four-year letterman and three-year starter on offense at guard/center. In 1980 he was named to the All-ECAC Division II Football team and was also the 1980 recipient of the Dr. Vinton H. Rambo Outstanding Sr. Lineman award. In 1981, John signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.
