Phil Bankert

A 1960 New Oxford High School graduate, Phil had a 50–4 record while in high school. In 1966 he qualified for and played in the U.S. Open which was held at the Olympic Country Club. Professionally he worked as a golf pro for 20 years at Harrisburg’s Colonial Country Club and for 10 years at South Hills in Hanover. Phil is remembered for helping popularize the game in the area, particularly among youth, by being an avid proponent of junior golf and as such he held many clinics for youth. Bankert was named 1986 “Person of the Year” by the Harrisburg District Golf Association. In 2003, the Colonial Golf and Tennis Club re-named its annual better ball tournament the “Phil Bankert Classic” in his honor.
