Following his discharge from the Army after World War II, he entered Gettysburg College and quickly became one of the finest college football linemen in the country. He started all 17 games his junior and senior years and was named first team All-State both years. In 1949 he was selected to play with the College All-Stars against the world champion New York Giants and was the first college team to beat the pros. He was one of Gettysburg’s top outfielders in baseball. Following several years at Frederick High School, he returned to Gettysburg as football and head baseball coach. He was the second longest tenured baseball coach at the college next to Ira Plank.
