Born and raised on a farm outside Biglerville, Dick graduated from Biglerville High School in 1950. While in high school he ran track and played football, basketball and baseball. Although he had the opportunity to pursue a professional baseball career, his assistance on the family farm was needed. Dick did, however, pursue his love of baseball in the South Penn Baseball League. His strong arm and blazing fastball was feared by unsuspecting young players. Dick continued to play until 1975 at the age of 43. He also served as an assistant coach of the Bendersville and Arendtsville teams. Three awards have been established in his name and are annually presented in the Upper Adams Youth Baseball League.
