Russell is best known as an outstanding football coach at Bermudian Springs High School where he compiled a career record of 84-45 and a playoff record of 7-1. His teams had two undefeated seasons, had a 34 game regular season undefeated record, three times were the District III champions and once were the runner-ups. After winning the Blue Mountain League Championship in 1991 he was named the league Coach of the Year and was named the Mid Penn League Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1997 as well as the Hanover Evening Sun Coach of the Year three times and the Gettysburg Times Coach of the Year four times. In 1994, the South Central Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame honored him with a special Recognition award.
