A native of McSherrystown, he spent most of his 15 years in the major leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals and two with Boston Braves. Manager Rogers Hornsby said, “Sherdel is one of the craftiest left hand pitchers of his time.” Posted 165–146 record for 3.72 ERA in 514 games, 2709 innings. Had only four losing seasons with best in 1928 at 21–10; recorded 839 strikeouts, 661 walks. Pitched in two World Series, both against Yankees. Cards won world title in 1926 but lost in 1928. Won one of two games pitching past Ruth, Meusel, Gehrig and Lazzeri. Batted career .223 on 214 hits with nine home runs, 86 RBI. Fielded .955 and started 25 double plays.
