Gardner was a four-time state qualifier in wrestling for Biglerville High School. With a career record of 165-26, he twice was Sectional champion, District III champion, and Regional champion. Gardner medaled at states three times, placing second in 2011 and third in 2012. He graduated as the Biglerville school record holder in wins in a career (165), and wins in a season (43). He went on to compete at Lehigh University, where he was a letter-winner all four years and team captain his senior year. Three of those years, Gardner qualified for the Division I national wrestling tournament. He won Lehigh’s Gerry Lehman Award, given to the wrestler who shows outstanding heart and perseverance. Three times, Gardner was a high school All-American in Greco-Roman style wrestling.
