Conrad graduated from Delone Catholic in 1979, where he led the South Central League in scoring as a basketball player his senior year. He was named a Top 15 Player in the Harrisburg area. He was selected to play for the PA All-Stars against the USSR National team at Gettysburg College, then continued his basketball career at Bloomsburg University, where he led his team to one PSAC and two NCAA tournaments. After serving as an assistant coach at Shenandoah and then Bucknell, Conrad was named head coach at Lycoming College. He led the team to their first-ever conference championship and an NCAA tournament bid. He was named Coach of the Year in the Freedom Division of the Middle Atlantic Conference in 2002.
